The small, unincorporated community of Emigrant is located in southern Montana along the Yellowstone River, about 20 miles south of Livingston. At an elevation of 4,882 feet, Emigrant has a population of fewer than 400 people.

The town of Emigrant originated as a railroad stop for mining and agriculture. Today, many structures are relatively new with an old western style of architecture. Emigrant is a popular area for fly fishing and home to many species, such as the American badger and black-billed magpie. The area relies heavily on tourism, with facilities open year round. Many parts of the films A River Runs Through It and The Horse Whisperer were filmed in Emigrant.
